Abstract
The nature and magnitude of combining ability for four yield characteristics was studied in 243 crosses involving three cytoplasmically male-sterile lines and 81 male parents. The analysis of variance revealed that hybrids differed significantly for plant height, ear length and grain yield, but not for ear girth. The pollen parents were grouped into classes on the basis of general combining ability for plant height, ear length and grain yield. Of the female parents, 23D2A was the best general combiner for plant height, ear length and grain yield. Tift 23A was a good combiner for grain yield and ear length
