Abstract
Experiments were conducted to study the effect of seed colouring of red gram, black gram and bengal gram seeds encompassing 25 dyes to identify non-deleterious and deleterious dyes based on their effect on seed quality. The dyes namely Rhodamine-B, Fuchsine and Titan yellow for red gram; Rhodamine-B, Fuchsine and Phenol red for black gram; and Rhodamine-B, Crystal violet, Titan yellow for bengal gram were the best dyes for seed colouring at 0.75% concentration. The development of colour standards for red gram, black gram and bengal gram seeds and their implications for the Indian seed industry are also discussed.
