Abstract

The efficacy of spinosad 45 SC (0.4 ml/litre), indoxacarb 14.5 SC (1.0 ml/litre), monocrotophos 36 EC (1.5 ml/litre) and Metarhizium (1.0×108/g) against M. vitrata infesting pigeon pea (cv. ICPL 88034) was evaluated in Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India, during the rainy season of 2005. The crop exhibited flowering in the first week of August. M. vitrata adults started to infest pigeon pea on the second fortnight of August, recording the highest population density on 17 September (6.5 larvae per plant). The insecticides were effective in controlling the larval population. The greatest reduction in larval population (82.0%) was obtained with spinosad within 2 days after application. At 5 days after application, spinosad was also superior in the reduction of larval population (93.0%). Pod damage was lowest in plants sprayed with spinosad (8.5%) and indoxacarb (11.8%); both treatments also registered the lowest seed damage (3.9 and 3.7%, respectively) and highest grain yield (795 and 688 kg/ha).
