Abstract
When 2804 accessions, including breeding lines and varieties of Cajanus cajan, 198 intergeneric hybrids between Cajanus and Atylosia, and A. platycarpa and A. lineata were screened for resistance to sterility mosaic (possibly resulting from a virus transmitted by Aceria cajani) by stapling leaves of infected plants to those of healthy ones, only five C. cajan lines (ICRISAT accessions 3783, 6986, 6997, 7035 and 7119 (Hy. 3C)) were immune; C. cajan ICRISAT accessions 1131 and 2719 and A. lineata showed less than 10% infection; C. cajan ICRISAT accessions 276, 2360, 6392 and 6546 showed mild mosaic symptoms; 338 lines flowered in spite of infection; and all infected plants of ICRISAT 5004 and ICRISAT 5038 flowered.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:When 2804 accessions, including pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) lines and cvs., Atylosia spp. and C. X A. crosses, were screened for resistance to the sterility mosaic agent (using a leaf stapling inoculation technique) 4 pigeon pea lines (ICRISAT 3783, 6986, 6997, 7035), and one cv. (ICRISAT 7119 or Hy.3C) were immune. Lines showing other desirable characters including longer incubation period, less disease incidence, mild symptoms and flowering in spite of infection were also identified.
