Abstract
This document reports the research work carried out on chickpea and pigeonpea cultivars at ICRISAT Center during 1989 on grain quality and biochemical aspects. Although there were no significant differences between 4 desi and 5 kabuli chickpea cultivars regarding particle size index, the differences between genotypes were significant (p0.01). ICCV 6 showed the highest floatation value and the lowest value was obtained for ICCV 37. Cooking time of whole seed of three cultivars, Dooen, Amethyst, and Tyson ranged between 86 and 94 min., protein content between 2.37 to 24.7%. Proline was significantly higher in leaf samples of both Annigeri and ICC 506 from unirrigated than those from field, while starch content ranged between 15.9 and 19.7%, crude fibre content between 9.2 and 12%. Two vegetable pigeonpea genotypes were tested for accumulation of dry matter and crude fibre content and both were faster in ICP 7035 than in T15-15. Calcium and magnecium contents were higher at all stages in T15-15, while zinc and iron didn't show significant differences. Out of 10 newly developed pigeonpea cultivars tested, ICPL 87 has the lowest calcium content. Cooking time of these cultivars ranged between 18 and 27 min.; protein content between 20.5 and 23.9%; protein digestibility between 87.6 and 92.8%; biological value between 61.0 and 70.6%; utilizable protein between 12.1 and 14.8%; fat content of whole seed 1.0 to 3.2 and 100-seed mass between 4.5 and 22.5 g
