Abstract
Surveys conducted by ICRISAT scientists in 1986-87 and 1988 revealed the problem of crop growth variability to be particularly serious on groundnut especially in the sandy soils found in all the major groundnut producing f f - 2 - f areas of Niger and the presence of parasitic nematodes particularly Scutellonena clathricaudatum in the rhizospheres and root samples of groundnut plants. Population densities of parasitic nematodes, particularly S. clathricaudatum were higher in the roots of stunted and chlorotic plants. In 1989, finvestigations on the role of plant-parasitic nematodes in causing the variability of groundnut growth in the Sahel were started. This report gives an overview of the objectives of the program, and the results of the various experiments conducted on the possible controle measures including crop frotations, intercropping, and pesticide application
