Abstract
Studies on nitrogen-fixation and nodulation in pigeonpeas have been difficult because nodules on these plants form primarily on secondary roots deep in the soil. Since direct observations are impossible, nodulation can only be measured indirectly. This can be accomplished by measuring compounds present in xylem flow exuded following decapitation of the plant. Since 90% of the nitrogen exported from nodules is in the form of weeds, including allantoin and allantoic acid, an accurate assessment can be made of nodulation status of pigeonpeas with this method
