V Aruna and B Hanumanth Rao ably furnished administrative assistance in a very friendly working environment. I am particularly grateful to P Parthasarathy Rao and Pratap Singh Birthal who contributed data sets and exchanged ideas that laid the foundation for this report. Indeed, Pratap’s and Partha’s knowledge of suitable data is one of the strengths of the report. Inputs from Peter Cooper, K Palaniswami, R Padmaja, Farid Waliyar, Pierre C Sibiry Traore, K.PC Rao, Kamanda Josey Ondieki, P Anand Babu, Mike Butterfield, and Jupiter Ndjeunga were important in shaping the work.
