Abstract
Northeast Thailand has a population of about 14.5 million and covers an area of 170,000 km2 . The region accounts for about one-third of Thailand’s population and area. The region is characterized by a relatively poor endowment of natural resources and low living standard of the people. Per capita income of the rural family is about 40 per cent of the country’s average and only 30 per cent of the central region (excludes Bangkok). Over 85 per cent of the total population is engaged in agriculture. Family farming is the major characteristic of agricultural production. Farming is done on small scale and crop yield is generally low due to poor soil productivity and erratic rainfall. Farm work is heavily concentrated in May to July and October to November.
