Abstract

The reasons for the growing imbalance of sulphur in agriculture, and the effects of this on plant nutrition, crop quality and yields are discussed, also yield responses to sulphur fertilizers, the sulphur status of tropical soils, and the sulphur balance sheet in a soil. Priority areas in different countries, sulphur additions and removals under subsistence and modern agriculture, and the gap between sulphur requirements and supply are indicated. A strategy to meet the sulphur problem is outlined.
