Abstract
This is the submission to the CGIAR that led to ICRISAT being awarded the 1996 King Baudouin Award for outstanding research achievement. This was the first King Baudouin award ever received by ICRISAT. The topic was the genetic improvement of pearl millet. Resistance to downy mildew disease is highlighted as a major achievement. Millet is grown in the driest environments facing any cereal crop, so drought and early maturity were additional important traits highlighted. The value of African 'Iniadi' race germplasm in crosses to improve pearl millet both in Asia and in Africa is described. Benefits to India from the adoption of the new pearl varieties were estimated at US$54 million annually in 1996. This document is written in an easily accessible style for non-specialists.
