Abstract
The Pennisetum americanum hybrid ICMH451 (= MH179) was derived from a cross between ICMP451 and the male-sterile line 81A (ICMA1), itself derived from Tift 23D2B after seed treatment with γ rays. ICMH451 is of medium height (1.7-1.8 m); it flowers in 52-56 days and matures in 85-90. Its spikes are 25-30 cm long and semicompact with brown bristles. The grains are medium sized with a 1000 grain weight of 7-8 g. The hybrid yields 2.25 t grain/ha (average), or 8% more than the control MBH110; it yields 5.8 t fodder/ha or 23% more than MBH110. It is highly resistant to downy mildew [Sclerospora graminicola].
