Abstract
ICSV197 (= SPV692; PM11344) was developed from the cross IS3443 X DJ6514 using pedigree selection for resistance to Contarinia sorghicola in the F2-F5 and F6-bulk evaluation. ICSV197 is a tall, photoinsensitive, midseason variety which grows to a height of 1.8-3.0 m and matures in 115-125 days. The plant is tan coloured with a moderately thick, non-juicy stem, a semicompact to open panicle and short glumes which cover about a quarter of the grain. The variety has high, stable midge resistance; it is also resistant to Colletotrichum graminicola, Puccinia and Gloeocercospora sorghi. It gives 10 t fodder/ha, about 30% more than the high-yielding variety CSV11, and equals this variety in grain yield (2.8 t/ha). The grains contain 10.3% protein and 2.9% lysine per g of protein, and have good cooking quality. The variety is adapted to both rainfed and irrigated conditions.
