Abstract

The current status of the sorghum world collections maintained by the Genetic Resources Unit at ICRISAT is discussed along with their evaluation, documentation and utilization in the ICRISAT sorghum improvement programme and by other institutions. Progress in screening for disease and drought resistance, crop establishment and male sterility is described. Alternative uses such as for forage, brewing and alcohol production are included. Classification systems and future germplasm utilization and evaluation are also dealt with.
