Abstract
Leaf area development, light interception and DM production of 4 contrasting pearl millet [P. americanum] cultivars were investigated at mean air temp. of 19.5, 21.0, 26.0 and 31.0°C. Growth was slowest at 19.5° and fastest at 31.0°. The canopies of the cultivars varied considerably with regard to their light transmission coeff., from 0.47 for Sanio to 0.23 for Oasis, and in their mean efficiency of energy conversion, from 1.0 to 2.7 g/MJ. The ranking of the cultivars in these respects was consistent with those previously reported for germination and early establishment
