    Abstract

    Your excellencies, distinguished soil scientists, delegates, ladies and gentlemen. I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the 12th International Congress of Soil Science. At the outset I must say how grateful we are to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Indian Society of Soil Science for inviting us to hold the 13th International Congress of Soil Science in this historic city of New Delhi and to the President of India for inaugurating it. Those of you who attended the 11 th Congress in Edmonton, Canada, will recall that the date and venue of this Congress were announced at that time.
