Abstract
Submerged rice fields are considered an important source of atmospheric methane and attention is focussed on mitigating methane emissions from wetland rice soils. We assess here the prospects of reducing methane emission from flooded rice soils by using nitrification inhibitors. Nitrification inhibitors retard nitrification, affect nitrogen transformations other than nitrification, and reduce nitrous oxide production in upland soils. The review of recent literature indicates that nitrification inhibitors have the ability to inhibit or retard methane production and emission in submerged rice soils............
