Sources of resistance to bud necrosis disease in groundnut.

    Abstract

    Some 242 groundnut genotypes were evaluated in Jagtial, Andhra Pradesh, India, during 1996/97 for resistance to bud necrosis (caused by groundnut bud necrosis virus) under field conditions. Bud necrosis incidence was recorded at 10-day intervals from 30 days after sowing (DAS) to one week before harvesting. Bud necrosis appeared first in JL 24 (susceptible control) at 20, 39 and 22 DAS in kharif 1996 (98% incidence), rabi 1996/97 (66%) and kharif 1997 (69%), respectively. This line also showed the greatest disease incidence in all years. Only 89/94-3-2 remained disease-free throughout the experiment. Based on disease incidence (estimated based on the number of plants infected at a given time) and A-values (estimated based on the disease incidence and age of crop recorded several times during the cropping season to arrive at a single point scoring and measure the disease progress), 10 of the genotypes were promising resistant sources (ICGV 92269, 89/94-3-2, ICGV 91229, ICGV 91193, 89/94-7-3, 83/151-7, 85/203-6, ICGV 91248, ICGV 91117 and ICGV 86031), with 89/94-3-2, ICGV 92269, 83/151-7 and 85/203-6 consistently recording low disease incidence and A-values. The evaluation based on A-values was found to be more useful in the identification of promising groundnut genotypes with field resistance to bud necrosis.
