Abstract

To study CMS in progeny derived from wide hybridization, pod and seed set was studied in 5 pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan] lines by hand pollination and natural cross pollination during 1994-95. Hand pollination of pollen-sterile pot plants raised from progeny 12-3 by the fertile line ICPL85010-1 resulted in 62.5% pod set and an average of 2.6 seeds were harvested from each pod. Male-sterile plants under open pollination also achieved good pod set with an average of 45 hybrid pods/plant and 1.8 seeds/pod. Pollination studies showed that the CMS plants were female fertile, produced viable seed and thus can be used in developing commercial hybrids.
