Abstract

Yield components and seed protein content were evaluated for 13 accessions of C. platycarpus, a wild relative of pigeon pea (C. cajan), grown at ICRISAT Asia Center in 1989. Significant differences among accessions were observed for all traits examined, except number of primary branches, pod length and pod width. In general, accessions had poor branching, variable seed size, and took 36 to 49 days to flower and 82 to 96 days to mature. The highest seed yields were recorded in ICPW71, ICPW63, ICPW70 and ICPW66 (19.6, 15.5, 14.8, and 14.5 g/plant, respectively). Seed yield was positively associated with number of primary branches (r = 0.45) and pods/plant (r = 0.83). Seed protein contents were in the range 27.6 (ICPW60) to 31.6% (ICPW65) which is higher than in pigeon pea (22%). ICPW70 was identified as being rich in methionine and cysteine (2.49 g/100 g protein). When each accession was crossed with pigeon pea lines ICPL88014 and ICPL85030 as pollen donors, no fertile hybrids were produced. IPCW64 and ICPW70 produced hybrid plants with both pigeon pea lines but hybrid seeds were undeveloped and failed to germinate. Reciprocal pollination using C. platycarpus as male parent was unsuccessful.
