Abstract

The National Plant Genetic Resources Centre (Arusha, Tanzania) and ICRISAT collected 87 accessions of chickpea [Cicer arietinum] germplasm and observed agricultural practices during a joint collecting mission to 5 areas of Tanzania in August 1994. Chickpea was found to grow well with average seed yields of 1.0-1.5 t/ha, to be free from lodging, survive drought conditions, and have a low incidence of insect damage and disease. There is scope both to expand the area under cultivation and improve productivity with some minor changes to cultural practices.
