Abstract
Three cycles of recurrent selection were completed in Dwarf Nigerian Composite (NCD2) for the ability of an A4 system to maintain cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterility. Some 36% of the unselected bulk (C0) progenies did not shed pollen and were male-sterile, 88% of C1 progeny were male-sterile and all progeny after 2 selections (C2). Hybrids from crosses between bulks from each selection cycle and a male-sterile line (81A4) were evaluated. The frequency of male-sterile plants increased from 62% in the 81A4 × C0 topcross hybrid to 93% in 81A4 × C1 and 100% in 81A4 × C2.
