Abstract

Isoenzyme, RFLP and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analyses were carried out on 2 sets of chickpea (Cicer arietinum) varieties. Isoenzyme analysis of a number of enzymes in both sets detected only one polymorphism, for alanyl naphthlyamide aminopeptidase, RFLP analysis failed to show polymorphism, while RAPD analysis successfully detected varietal differences and gave sharp banding patterns; DNA of 3 of the 8 varieties in one set showed polymorphism when hybridized with 14 different primers containing 10 bases each, while all 4 primers used for the second set of varieties showed polymorphism. Thus, these primers with short sequences were able to detect genomic variations at relatively high frequency.
