Abstract
Phase III (1993-98) of the SADC/ICRISAT Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program (SMIP), gave priority to promoting the transfer of improved technologies (primarily improved sorghum and pearl millet varieties) to small farmers. This paper looks at: the principles and approaches in technology exchange; technology exchange vs. technology transfer; the key role of national programmes in impact generation; joint planning; linkage development; the concept of stewardship; activities and outputs (improved sorghum and pearl millet varieties); on-farm variety testing; variety release; seed production and dissemination; technology exchange activities in crop management; and extension development.
