Abstract

In 1989, the Oil Plant Institute of Vietnam initiated a project in collaboration with Tay Ninh province, Ho Chi Minh City and ICRISAT to purify and select improved types from the local LY groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) population. Pod samples were collected from a number of locations in Cu Chi, Trang Bang, Go Dau and Song Be, bulked and the resulting seed sown in Cu Chi. Of over 1000 randomly harvested plants, 400 were selected on the basis of their pod and seed characteristics. Following evaluation in the next season, 20 progeny bulks with superior pod/seed characteristics were retained for evaluation, and finally 3 progeny bulks (LY1, LY2 and LY3) were compared with LY. Selections were evaluated for pod yield, shelling percentage, viable mature seeds, 100-seed weight and oil content during 1991-95. In 1995 LY1 was released as VD1 for cultivation in southern Vietnam. In farmers' fields in Cu Chi and/or Trang Bang, VD1 recorded an average pod yield of 3.44 t/ha compared with 2.93 t/ha for LY. VD1 has 77% shelling, 90% seed viability, an 100-seed weight of 42 g and an oil content of 47%. It is of erect habit, and its pods are mostly 2-seeded and round. The tan coloured, round seeds measure 9 × 12 mm on average. VD1 matures in 90 days, has a high pod yield and is well adapted to acidic soils.
