Abstract

ICGV-SM85048 is a high yielding Spanish-type groundnut (Arachis hypogaea subsp. fastigiata var. vulgaris) breeding line released as Stella in Mauritius in 1992. It is suitable for cultivation both in sugarcane interrows and in pure stands. ICGV-SM85048 was derived from the double cross (Goldin 1 × Faizpur 1-5) × (Manfredi × M13). In trials at 3 locations in Mauritius in 1992, yield increases of 27.3-41.5% over local cultivar Cabri were recorded. In trials conducted in Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland and Zambia during 1990/91, pod yield increases over controls ranged from 8.1 to 69.0%. Days to maturity of ICGV-SM85048 at Chitedzde, Malawi, range from 116 to 126. It has 2-seeded pods, a shell turnover of 66-71% and 100-seed mass of 30-41 g. Seeds are deep red and contain 54% oil and 26% protein. ICGV-SM85048 is resistant to web blotch (Phoma arachidicola [Didymosphaeria arachidicola]) in Mauritius and tolerant of early leaf spot (Cercospora arachidicola [Mycosphaerella arachidis]).
