Abstract
ICGV-SM83005 is a high-yielding Spanish-type groundnut (Arachis hypogaea subsp. fastigiata var. vulgaris) breeding line derived from a cross of Robut 33-1 and NC Ac2698. Its pod yield increase over control varieties in 39 regional trials varied from 3.6% in Malawi to 121.7% in Lesotho, averaging 8.7% in 24 multilocational trials in Zambia. It matures in 108-133 days and has 2-seeded thin-shelled pods. Shell turnover is 64-73% and 100-seed weight averages 46 g. ICGV-SM83005 is marginally superior to Comet and Malimba in reaction to early leaf spot (Cercospora arachidicola [Mycosphaerella arachidis]) in Malawi and Zambia, and to Comet in its reaction to rust (Puccinia arachidis) in Zambia. It is recommended for southern Africa and was released in 1995 as Chipego for cultivation in low and medium-rainfall areas of Zambia.
