Abstract

This new variety, named Swetha and released in 1989, was selected from the cross F3 ((K850 X GW5/7) X P458) X F3 (L550 X Guamuchil)-2. It has Fusarium oxysporum resistance, tolerates drought, salinity and heat stress and is less sensitive to daylength variations than common varieties. It has a spreading growth habit and flowers 2 weeks and matures 1 week earlier than Annigeri. Its seed protein content, biological value, true digestibility, net protein utilization and utilizable protein were 23.4%, 79.0%, 83.8%, 66.2% and 14.3%, respectively, compared with 19.4%, 72.7%, 80.1%, 58.3% and 10.5% for Annigeri. Its 100-seed weight was 24.0 g. It yielded up to 3.3 t/ha in Maharashtra in 1988-89 with irrigation and fertilization.
