bibo:abstract "Legumes such as chickpea, pigeonpea and\r\ngroundnut are among the most important\r\ncrops grown in Asia and Sub-Saharan\r\nAfrica. India is the major grower as well as\r\nconsumer of all these legume crops. In\r\nfact, India is also the biggest importer of\r\nchickpea and pigeonpea. The productivity\r\nof these three legumes has been stagnant\r\nand unacceptably low for decades as they\r\nare grown in marginal environments.\r\nCereals have been the major beneficiary of\r\nutilizing genomics approaches in breeding\r\nand the above mentioned legumes have\r\nstarted to catch up very recently with\r\ncereals and other crops in terms of\r\ngenomic interventions in their breeding.\r\nFor instance, last ten years have witnessed\r\nsignificant progress in the area of\r\ndevelopment and deployment of genomic\r\ntools in crop improvement programs.\r\nBetter genotypes with enhanced levels of\r\nresistance to biotic and abiotic stress as\r\nwell as higher yields have been designed\r\nand developed in all three legume crops.\r\nAdvances in sequencing and phenotyping\r\ntechnologies are expected to see the\r\noptimization and deployment of some\r\nmodern genomics-assisted breeding\r\napproaches such as genomic selection,\r\nearly generation screening, genome editing\r\netc.We believe that by integrating genomics in\r\nbreeding, better seeds can be developed\r\nand those seeds coupled with appropriate\r\nagronomy and management practices can\r\nprovide better produce in the farmer’s\r\nfields."^^xsd:string;
