"Soil health to human and animal health through breeding biofortified cultivars and balanced nutrient management for nutrition revolution in India"^^ . "India has larger prevalence of\r\nmicronutrient malnutrition as 50% of\r\nchildren and women are suffering from\r\none or more essential micronutrient\r\ndeficiency. There is an urgent need for the\r\ncountry to address this issue of\r\nmalnutrition holistically through addressing\r\nthe issue of soil health to animal and\r\nhuman health. Widespread multi-nutrient\r\ndeficiencies in soil are resulting in nutrient\r\ndeficient food leads to malnutrition.\r\nFeeding the children with supplements to\r\naddress the issue is good to fix the issue\r\nquickly. However, in long-term, to find a\r\nsustainable solution, we need to adopt\r\nholistic approach. Along with\r\ndemonstrated soil health management,\r\nbiofortification research at ICRISAT is\r\nfocused on improving grain Fe and Zn\r\ndensity. Our approach is to provide a\r\n“proof of concept” to address the issue of\r\nmalnutrition through soil health\r\nmanagement and biofortification of staple\r\nfood crops.\r\nTo make impact, soil health mapping,\r\nbalanced soil nutrient for increasing crop\r\nyields and quality are proposed.\r\nGovernment of India has taken up soil\r\nhealth mapping and issuing soil health\r\ncards to all the farmers. Further,\r\nintegration of biofortified cultivars of crops\r\nlike millets in the states and country\r\nstrategy, would help to achieve future\r\ntargets of biofortified cultivars to reach\r\none billion people by 2030. Market is a key\r\ndriver for long-term adoption of\r\nbiofortified cultivars by farmers and\r\nconsumers, and a recent initiative on\r\nSmart-foods on millets and pulses by\r\nICRISAT is expected to enhance this uptake\r\nprocess in collaboration with food\r\nindustries. Holistic approach starting with\r\nidentifying the soil nutrient deficiencies,\r\nmeeting the crop demands through\r\nbalanced soil nutrient management and\r\nusing biofortified cultivars, can have\r\nincreased micronutrient uptake capacity as\r\nwell as capacity to have nutrient dense\r\ngrains and fodder by increased nutrientuse\r\nefficiency and would significantly\r\ncontribute to improved nutrition by\r\nincreasing the daily micronutrient intakes\r\nas evidenced by bioavailability studies in\r\nmillets..."^^ .
