bibo:abstract "In the semi-arid tropics (SAT) farmers practice calendar-\r\nbased irrigation scheduling, which generally\r\nresults in over irrigation and poor water use efficiency.\r\nThe lack of a simple decision tool to decide\r\ntiming and quantity of water to be applied is a bottleneck.\r\nAn Excel-based decision support system termed\r\nWater Impact Calculator (WIC) is developed using\r\ndata collected at the ICRISAT, which were validated\r\nat three pilot sites on farmers’ fields in Rajasthan,\r\nGujarat and Telangana. Field studies were conducted\r\nunder two land-form treatments (broad bed and furrow\r\n(BBF) and flat fields); and irrigation water was\r\napplied following two different methods (drip and\r\nflood). The data collected at micro-watershed at the\r\nICRISAT and three other sites showed that WIC\r\ncould be used under wide range of soil and rainfall\r\nconditions. WIC simulated soil moisture was comparable\r\nwith the observed moisture data, which forms\r\nthe basis of irrigation scheduling. The WIC-based\r\nwater balance at these experimental sites showed that\r\nnumber and amount of irrigation could be reduced by\r\n30–40% using WIC-based irrigation scheduling without\r\ncompromising the crop yield. The WIC could be a\r\npotential tool for water resources planning and efficient\r\nmanagement at the field and watershed scale in\r\nthe SAT."^^xsd:string;
