"Associated red and black soils are common in the Deccan\r\nplateau and the Indian peninsula. The red soils\r\nare formed due to the progressive landscape reduction\r\nprocess and black soils due to the aggradation processes;\r\nand they are often spatially associated maintaining\r\ntheir typical characteristics over the years.\r\nThese soils are subject to changes due to age-long\r\nmanagement practices and the other factors like climate\r\nchange. To maintain soil quality, it is essential to\r\nmonitor changes in soil properties preferably using\r\nbenchmark (BM) soil sites. One such example lies at\r\nthe International Crops Research Institute for the\r\nSemi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) farm in Patancheru,\r\nIndia where red (Patancheru) and black (Kasireddipalli)\r\nsoils co-exist in close association under almost\r\nsimilar topographical condition, which also represents\r\nvery commonly occurring spatially associated soils.\r\nThe database generated over the years for these two\r\ndominant soils that are under cultural practices for\r\nthe last 2–3 decades, helps us understand the relative\r\nchanges in properties over a time scale. To do this\r\nexercise, we revisited the BM spots as the data on the\r\noriginal characterization of these soils since the development of the farm, are available, for comparative\r\nevaluation. We also attempted to make prediction of\r\nfuture changes in properties for these two important\r\nand representative black and red soils of the ICRISAT\r\nfarm in Patancheru, India."^^ .
