bibo:abstract "Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] was\r\ndomesticated in Sahelian West Africa. This highly\r\noutcrossing crop is one of the most important\r\nstaple cereals in the semiarid tropics, adapted to\r\nvery harsh rain-fed conditions. Agro-morphological\r\ncharacterization of local germplasm is very\r\nimportant to better understand existing diversity,\r\nease targeted genetic broadening of breeding\r\npopulations, and potentially link this knowledge\r\nto genotypic information. The objectives of our\r\nstudy were to (i) characterize West and Central\r\nAfrican (WCA) pearl millet accessions based on\r\ntheir agro-morphological traits; (ii) evaluate the\r\npossibility to group accessions based on their\r\nagro-morphological characteristics; (iii) determine\r\ngeographic patterns of phenotypic differentiation;\r\nand (iv) derive conclusions for pearl millet\r\nimprovement in WCA. A total of 360 early-tomedium\r\nmaturity accessions were phenotyped\r\nfor 12 agro-morphological traits at six environments\r\nin WCA. Wide ranges of all observed traits\r\nindicated a high diversity of the tested accessions.\r\nPrincipal component analysis revealed\r\nvery large diversity within individual countries,\r\nespecially within Mali and Burkina Faso. Some\r\nlimited grouping of accessions from Niger, Senegal,\r\nCameroon, Morocco, and Mauritania was\r\nobserved for individual principal component\r\naxes. Geographical differentiation and country\r\ndifferences were detected for several traits. The\r\nresults and data presented in our study reflect\r\nWCA pearl millets’ tremendous diversity and\r\nadaptability to a wide range of environments and\r\ngive a sound basis for breeders to select and utilize\r\nthis germplasm to serve the manifold needs\r\nof WCA pearl millet farmers."^^xsd:string;
