"There is an emerging consensus that the well-being of rural households\r\nimprove with the blending of farm activities with non-farm economic\r\nactivities. The diversification of rural livelihood positively impacts the wellbeing\r\nof the rural households. Eastern states however remained laggard in\r\nrural transformation due to myriad of endogenous as well as exogenous\r\nfactors. With uneven distribution of production assets, poor infrastructure\r\nand governance, low levels of literacy, skills, awareness and connectivity\r\nand limitations of alternative options for livelihood, the high prevalence of\r\npoverty in the region becomes the structural corollary. This paper delves\r\ninto its multiple dimensions of rural transformation with focus on selected\r\neastern states of India. Considering very small landholding of the farmers\r\nand thereby negligible employment elasticity to agricultural growth,\r\ncreation of non-agricultural opportunities, diversification, and\r\ntransformation of rural economy towards expanding rural non-farm\r\nemployment are adjunct to the strategies of managing vulnerabilities\r\nassociated to the region bringing meaningful structural change in the rural\r\nsocio-economic conditions."^^ .
