"The green revolution fulfilled the food demand of crowded\r\nmillions. From the time of green revolution to till date high\r\nyielding and fertilizer responsive varieties have evolved to\r\nincrease the production per unit area.\r\nTo improve the productivity\r\nonly major nutrients are concentrated almost in all crops. Though\r\nthe importance of micronutrient realized during past decades in\r\nmost of the crops but it is not effectively materialized in general\r\ncrop cultivation practices. The micronutrient deficiencies in soil\r\nare not only hamper crop productivity but also deteriorating the\r\nproduce quality.\r\nWorld health organization (WHO) has estimated\r\nthat over 3 billion people in the globe suffer from the micronutrient\r\nmalnutrition and about 2 billion people of these have iron\r\ndeficiency. Iron is one of the 16 essential elements needed for\r\nplant growth. Iron is used for the synthesis of chlorophyll and is\r\nessential for the function of chloroplasts. Zinc is involved in\r\nmembrane integrity, enzyme activation, and gene expression.\r\nRice, sorghum and corn are Zn sensitive and sorghum, sugarcane,\r\ngroundnut, soyabean, beans, grapes, vegetables and citrus are\r\nhighly Fe sensitive crops.\r\nTo overcome these problems foliar\r\nspray is being recommended but it is not crop specific or soil\r\nspecific recommendation. Keeping these problems in the view,\r\nrecently development of micronutrient efficient genotypes,\r\ncreating awareness of micronutrient dose, crop specific micronutrient\r\nuptake and accumulation are vital to improve productivity\r\nand to address human health problems. In this paper\r\nwe discussed the importance of iron and zinc in agriculture and\r\ntheir role in crop plants and ways to improve the crop productivity\r\nas well as human health."^^ . "2011-12" . .
