bibo:abstract "Calcium-rich zeolites control naturally occurring\r\nchemical degradation in the black soils (Vertisols and\r\ntheir intergrades). With the help of modern tools such\r\nas remote sensing, geographic information system, soil\r\ndatabase, geological information, topography and\r\nother related datasets, an attempt was made to update\r\nthe distribution of zeolitic soils in India. To ascertain\r\nthe presence of Ca-rich zeolites in soils, mineralogical\r\ninformation was generated using X-ray diffraction\r\ntechniques for the selected soils from the Indo-Gangetic\r\nPlains and the black soil region (BSR). The zeolitic\r\nsoils are mostly confined in the pediments (sloping regions\r\nof the upland) of the Deccan plateau in BSR,\r\nalthough a few are also found along the valley floor.\r\nThe IGP, on the other hand, hosts the zeolitic black\r\nsoils along the drainage channels in the valley floor\r\nwhere the basaltic alluvium deposited the smectite and\r\nclay-rich sediments. The study indicates Ca-rich zeolitic\r\nsoils in India to occupy an area of ~2.8 m ha, of\r\nwhich BSR and IGP constitute ~92% and ~8% respectively.\r\nThe zeolites are mostly concentrated in the drier\r\ntracts of the country and help in maintaining soil\r\nhealth against natural soil degradation. While the\r\noccurrence of Ca-rich black soils in BSR was known,\r\nthose in the IGP are new findings. With the help of the\r\navailable information, we have generated state-of-art\r\ninformation approximation map on the distribution of\r\nCa-rich zeolites in Indian soils."^^xsd:string;
