	bibo:abstract "Three types of seed samples (selfed, sibbed\r\nand open pollinated) can be used for mineral\r\nanalysis in pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.)\r\nR. Br.] and other cross-pollinated crops. Cost\r\neffectiveness and reliability of mineral estimates\r\nin these types of seed samples have a direct\r\nbearing on breeding efficiency. Three sets of\r\nexperiments using a diverse range of materials\r\nwere conducted to examine the potential use of\r\nselfed and open pollinated (OP) seed samples\r\nfor the analysis of grain Fe and Zn density in\r\npearl millet. The results of this study showed\r\nthat reduction in seed set under selfing, a genotype-\r\ndependent typical trait of this crop, led\r\nto significant and large overestimates of Fe and\r\nZn density, indicating that selfed seeds cannot\r\nbe used for reliable estimation of grain Fe and\r\nZn density. There was no significant difference\r\nbetween the sibbed and crossed seeds, indicating\r\nthat there was no xenia effect. Differences\r\namong the sibbed and OP seeds for Fe, Zn,\r\nand Al density were small in magnitude and not\r\nalways significant, indicating that dust contamination\r\nwas not a significant factor determining\r\nFe and Zn density. Since production of OP seed\r\nis most cost effective, it can be used for reliable\r\nestimation of Fe and Zn density when dealing\r\nwith a large number of breeding lines, thereby\r\nenhancing the breeding efficiency for these\r\nmicronutrients in pearl millet."^^xsd:string;
