D-154 and C. olitorius cv. O-4 have been determined as a preliminary step in identifying and quantifying growth limitations of commonly grown jute genotypes. Dry matter accumulation of both genotypes was exponential for 40–50 days from sowing, with relative growth rates (RGR) of 0.14–0.20 g g−1 day−1 for ‘D-154’ and about 0.20 g g−1 day−1 for ‘O-4’. Thereafter, RGR declined markedly and continued at low a rate until final harvest, at up to 174 days. The decline in RGR coincided with the onset of the monsoon period. Harvest index, the proportion of fibre in the above-ground material, reached 18–20% in both ‘D-154’ and ‘O-4’ after 75 and 65 days from sowing, respectively. Visually assessed fibre quality was at a maximum between 75 and 105 days for ‘D-154’ and 50 and 70 days for ‘O-4’. After these periods quality progressively declined. These data suggest that there is considerable scope for genetic improvement of both total dry matter production and harvest index of jute, and thus total fibre yield. The key to such improvement appears to be prolonging the period of high RGR beyond 50 days, so as to maximise fibre production when its quality is highest. date: 1985 date_type: published publication: Field Crops Research volume: 12 number: 1-3 publisher: Elsevier pagerange: 387-395 refereed: TRUE issn: 0378-4290 official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0378-4290(85)90083-8 related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Plant+growth+curves+and+fibre+quality+changes+of+jute+%28Corchorus+spp.%29+grown+in+Bangladesh&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5 related_url_type: pub citation: Johansen, C and Waseque, M and Ahmed, M M and Begum, S (1985) Plant growth curves and fibre quality changes of jute (Corchorus spp.) grown in Bangladesh.
