bibo:abstract "Besides a major financial crisis\r\nsince 2008, a major inflation and\r\nvolatility of the price of the most\r\nimportant staple foods such as rice or\r\nwheat is threatening global food security,\r\nespecially for the millions of poor in\r\ndeveloping countries. Food production\r\nhas returned to the top of the political\r\nagenda worldwide. Today, we are at a\r\ncrossroads. About 850 million people\r\nstill go to bed hungry. Food production\r\nneeds to be increased by about 70% in\r\nthe next 40 years to feed over 9 billion\r\npeople by 2050 and food systems have\r\nto be more inclusive of the poorest\r\npopulation. To achieve this increase\r\nand food access for the most vulnerable,\r\nmany challenges need to be addressed,\r\nincluding a changing climate and shrinking\r\nnatural resources. Innovations such\r\nas high yield wheat and rice cultivars\r\nand fertilizers sparked a green revolution\r\nin South Asia in the 1960s but they are\r\nnow showing certain limits in terms of\r\nsustainability and profitability."^^xsd:string;
