This review examines the subject under the following headings: barriers to interspecific hybridization (abnormal embryo development, endosperm disintegration and abnormal development of ovular tissue); diploid and polyploid crop species; applications of ploidy manipulations (increasing crossability and hybrid viability, manipulating endosperm balance number, using unreduced (2n) gametes, providing greater versatility for gene transfer, production of hybrid and polyploid bridges, and transfer of chromosomes, genes or gene blocks). Examples are taken from work with a wide range of crop species date: 1990 date_type: published publication: Advances in Agronomy volume: 43 publisher: Academic Press pagerange: 199-240 refereed: TRUE issn: 0065-2113 related_url_url: http://scholar.google.co.in/scholar?as_q=Ploidy+manipulations+for+interspecific+gene+transfer&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_occt=title&as_sauthors=&as_publication=&as_ylo=&as_yhi=&btnG=&hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5 related_url_type: pub citation: Singh, A K and Moss, J P and Smartt, J (1990) Ploidy manipulations for interspecific gene transfer.
