"Globally, peanut is an important crop, providing both oil and protein,\r\nand gene banks across the world have conserved a large collection\r\nof peanut germplasm including wild Arachis species. The key to the\r\nsuccess in crop improvement depends on how effectively and effi ciently\r\nthe new genetic variation is introduced to broaden the genetic base\r\nof cultigens. The genus Arachis harbors considerable diversity for\r\nmorpho-agronomic traits including resistance to abiotic and biotic\r\nstresses. Impressive progress have been made towards developing\r\na large number of markers specific to peanut in addition to the\r\ntechnological breakthrough in developing high-throughput genotyping\r\nplatforms for unlocking the genetic variation present in the germplasm\r\ncollections. Using core and mini core collections and genomic tools,\r\npeanut researchers have identifi ed a number of diverse germplasm\r\npossessing agronomically benefi cial traits that are now being used in\r\npeanut breeding. Amphidiploids originating from distant wild Arachis\r\nspecies crosses are expected to unravel the variation not earlier available\r\nto peanut research community due to bottlenecks associated with\r\npeanut domestication."^^ .
