Using linear programming and data pertaining to a sample of 40 small farms below 2 ha. drawn from eight homogeneous stratified zones of West Godavari district, optimum farm plans were developed in limited capital and unlimited borrowed capital situations with the HYVs of paddy introduced as the processes in the matrix. The provision of credit helped in most of the cases in bringing the HYVs into the optimum plans on small farms but this was subject to the availability of suitable technology (varieties) to suit the agro-climatic regions and other necessary inputs like irrigation.
