"Desertification is one of the major challenges\r\nhuman society facing today and it is exacerbated\r\nby climate change, and threatens sustenance of\r\nhuman life on the planet. Desertification refers\r\nto the process of fertile land transforming into\r\ndesert, typically as a result of deforestation,\r\ndrought or improper/inappropriate\r\nagriculture. Desertification is a serious\r\nproblem for the drylands owing to climate\r\nchange or anthropological reasons affecting\r\nthe agricultural production and sustainability\r\nof ecologies (Geist, 2005). Drylands occupy\r\napproximately 40% of Earth’s land area and\r\nare home to more than 2 billion people. It has\r\nbeen estimated that nearly 10–20% of drylands\r\nare already degraded, the total area affected\r\nby desertification being between 6 and 12\r\nmillion square kilometers, that about 1–6% of\r\nthe inhabitants of drylands live in desertified\r\nareas, and that a billion people are under threat\r\nfrom further desertification (Johnson et al., 2006;\r\nWorld Bank, 2009). Therefore, it is important\r\nto understand the process of desertification,\r\nfactors contributing to it and interventions\r\nneeded to combat desertification for enhancing\r\nthe agricultural productivity and sustaining\r\nthe environment. Various public and private\r\nsector institutions, international and national\r\ncenters, civil society organizations are working\r\non formulating and implementing programs to\r\ncombat desertification."^^ .
