bibo:abstract "Continuing need to increase agricultural production has\r\nspurred the urge for developing cultivars with high\r\nproductivity and a high degree of resistance to insect pests.\r\nOne of the factors constraining crop production is losses due\r\nto insect pests, estimated at 14% of the total agricultural\r\nproduction (US$ 250 billion), despite application of\r\ninsecticides valued at $50 billion annually (Oerke 2006).\r\nHowever, many insect species, including cotton bollworm,\r\nHelicoverpa armigera (Hubner), have developed high levels\r\nof resistance to conventional insecticides. Therefore, there is\r\na need to harness all the technologies, including biotechnology\r\nfor crop protection for a sustainable growth in agriculture\r\nand food security. To achieve a satisfactory control of insect\r\npests, genes encoding d-endotoxins from Bacillus\r\nthuringiensis (Bt) have been deployed in a number of crops\r\nincluding cotton, and approved for commercial cultivation\r\nin several countries. Because of the potential benefits of\r\ngrowing genetically modified crops, their cultivation has\r\nincreased from 1.97 million ha in 1996 to over 160 million\r\nha in 2011 (James 2011). Cotton cultivars with Bt genes for\r\nresistance to cotton bollworm, H. armigera have resulted in\r\na significant decrease in number of insecticide sprays applied\r\nfor bollworm control in cotton, and increased cottonseed\r\nyield (Sharma et al. 2004, Sharma and Pampapathy 2006,\r\nDhillon et al. 2012). Although, the promise of genetically\r\nmodified crops has been realized in several crops and in\r\ndifferent regions for increasing crop production, it is important\r\nto address the concerns related to their impact on non-target\r\norganisms, biochemical composition and substantial\r\nequivalence to the conventional food."^^xsd:string;
