"Managing soil fertility constraints in market-led shift to high value agriculture for benefiting smallholders in the semi-arid tropics"^^ . "Low productivity and cultivation of low value crops in\r\nthe Indian semi-arid tropics (SAT) is the main cause for\r\npoor farm-based livelihoods. Poverty leading to low risktaking\r\nability of farmers and production related\r\nconstraints like widespread multi-nutrient deficiencies\r\nare major stumbling blocks for shifting to high value\r\nagriculture. Realizing the need to support povertyentrapped\r\nsmallholders to connect to markets, the\r\ngovernment of Karnataka state in India supported\r\nmarket-led shift to high value agriculture through a\r\nconsortium of technical institutions and convergence of\r\nagricultural schemes. New widespread deficiencies of\r\nsecondary and micronutrients like sulfur (52% farms),\r\nzinc (55%) and boron (62%) along with earlier known\r\ndeficiencies of nitrogen (52%) and phosphorus (41%)\r\nwere identified as main constraints for realizing\r\nproductivity potential and a threat for sustainability.\r\nPolicy supported initiative during 2011/12 showed more\r\neconomic returns with diversified high value crops and\r\nstrengthened 0.23 million smallholders. On-farm\r\nevaluations of soil test-based nutrient balancing to\r\ntomato, okra, brinjal, chilies, onion, cabbage and beans\r\nincreased productivity by 5 to 58% over the farmers’\r\npractice of adding macronutrients only. Small additional\r\ncost (` 770 to 1520 per ha) of balanced nutrition\r\nsignificantly increased additional benefits (` 5300 to\r\n74,000 per ha) with fairly high cost-benefit ratio (1:4 to\r\n1:82). Substantial returns enhanced risk-taking ability of\r\nsmallholders to manage productivity constraints in future\r\nby themselves. Results showed that initial little\r\ninvestments in science and market-led social assistance\r\nprograms should be a way forward for mainstreaming\r\npoverty-entrapped smallholders in other parts of SAT."^^ .
