"Livestock is a vital resource for smallholder farmers’\r\nlivelihoods in Central Asia, but shortage of winter season\r\nfodder is a major constraint to livestock productivity in\r\nthis region. Three pearl millet populations were\r\ncompared with a locally adapted improved maize variety\r\nin Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan for their forage potential in\r\nwheat-based cropping system as a second crop after\r\nwheat harvest. Two medium-maturity, dual-purpose\r\npopulations (HHVBC-Tall and Raj 171) significantly\r\nout-yielded locally adapted improved maize cultivars in\r\nboth countries that had different productivity levels.\r\nWhile HHVBC-Tall had 6.56 t ha-1 of dry forage yield in\r\nKyrgyzstan and 13.70 t ha-1 of dry forage yield in\r\nTajikistan (28% higher than maize cultivars in both\r\ncountries), Raj 171 had 18% higher dry forage yield than\r\nthe locally adapted improved maize variety in\r\nKyrgyzstan and 10% higher dry forage yield than locally\r\nadapted improved maize variety in Tajikistan. The\r\nbenefit-cost ratio from forage production of both pearl\r\nmillet populations was highest for HHVBC-Tall (0.89 in\r\nKyrgyzstan and 1.56 in Tajikistan), followed by Raj 171\r\n(0.74 in Kyrgyzstan and 1.20 in Tajikistan), which were\r\nmuch higher than those for maize varieties. These results\r\nshowed that medium-maturity pearl millet varieties have\r\ngood potential to fill in the fallow land after wheat\r\nharvest and significantly contribute to fodder security in\r\nCentral Asia."^^ .
