"The Village Dynamics in South Asia (VDSA) Project of\r\nthe International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-\r\nArid Tropics (ICRISAT) supported by the Bill & Melinda\r\nGates Foundation (BMGF) has chosen 42 villages as part\r\nof the project. These villages – 18 in the semi-arid tropics\r\n(SAT) of peninsular India, 12 in the Humid Tropics of\r\nEast India and 12 in Bangladesh – were selected based\r\non certain relevant characteristics to track rural poverty\r\nin household and village economies in the region, to\r\nprovide the most efficient way to understand the farming\r\nsystems in rural areas, and to identify the socioeconomic\r\nconstraints faced by the farming community. In the\r\nSAT region, 18 villages spread across 9 districts in 5\r\nstates were identified for the study. Of these, 6 were\r\nchosen way back in 1975 under the erstwhile Village\r\nLevel Studies (VLS) project of the Economics Program\r\nof ICRISAT, while 12 new villages were included in the\r\nexpanded VDSA project during 2009.
