Tanks supply many villages with drinking water, but their primary purpose is for irrigation. Tank irrigation is an old established practice in most of the semi-arid tropical parts of India and of some other countries. In India, the monsoon rains fall erratically during a few months in the year, and irrigation tanks serve to store and regulate the flow of water for agricultural use. In southern India this is primarily for the production of rice.
