bibo:abstract "Historically, India is the largest producer, consumer\r\nand importer of pulses. Although it is the world’s\r\nlargest pulses producer, there is still a huge shortage\r\nof pulses and also, the prices are not affordable to\r\na large section of consumers. An immediate need\r\nis the development and dissemination of low-cost\r\ntechnologies in pulses production, so that they can\r\nbe affordable to the common man. Even though\r\npulses production increased by 3.35% per annum\r\nduring the last decade, the cost of production and\r\nconsequent prices are too high to be affordable to the\r\ncommon man; to increase production at lower cost\r\nis a bigger challenge. The earlier experience shows\r\nthat technological efforts need to be supported by\r\nthe right policy environment to harvest fruits of R&D\r\nin agriculture (Reddy 2009). Still, the productivity of\r\npulses in India is low at 694 kg/ha, and to make pulses\r\nproduction internationally competitive, the average\r\nyield levels need to be increased to at least 1ton/ha..."^^xsd:string;
