        abstract = {Important relationships between climate and soil productivity in the tropics are assessed. Factors affecting productivity are: rainfall pattern, rainfall intensities and erosion, waterlogging, potential evapotranspiration, length of the growing season, temperature and wind. Case studies from the ICRISAT research centres in Niger and India show that productivity of tropical soils can be greatly enhanced by the application of improved understanding of climatic constraints to develop effective soil and water management practices}
